We’re Sharing 5 Ways to Fix the Problem

Uh-oh! One of your double sinks is backed up and causing chaos in your kitchen. Don’t worry. though! We’ll explain what may have caused the clog and offer tips for how you can fix it.

For starters, your sink is backing up because of a clog or blockage. When food accumulates in your sink’s drain, it can create a blockage that causes one of your double sinks to back up. The backup could also be the result of fat, hair or other objects that have caused a clog in your pipes.

Keep in mind that your double sinks actually share the same main drain. If both sides are clogged, the problem is most likely the main water line drain or your garbage disposal.

Here are five ways to try to remove the clog:

  1. Use a plunger. It really can be this easy sometimes. Fill your clogged sink with about three inches of water. This will create a seal between the plunger and the clogged pipe. Plug the unclogged side of the sink with a drain plug or rag. Then, on the clogged side, push the plunger several times and then remove it. This should remove the clog, If it doesn’t, repeat the process. If the backup in your sink is caused by your dishwasher, make sure to clamp the dishwasher hose first to prevent water from getting into the machine.
  2. Add baking soda and vinegar. First, remove any standing water from your sink. Then, pour a cup of baking soda down your drain followed by a cup of vinegar. Wait about 10 minutes. Finally, flush the drain with hot water.
  3. Try a plumber’s snake or coat hanger. If you think an object is stuck in the drain or pipe, a snake or coat hanger could be the answer.
  4. Be proactive. As the saying goes: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Make sure your sinks are equipped with drain screens to catch food and other debris. Plus, never pour food grease down the drain, where it can congeal and cause a clog.
  5. Call a professional. If you don’t feel comfortable handling this problem yourself or it’s not a simple fix, you can trust the skilled and experienced plumbers at Ricky Heath to find and eliminate the clog. Call us today!
